There were thousands who obeyed the gospel in Acts chapter 2, surely there was enough material for several large denominations, but there is not one word that even intimates that they divided into different denominations. “They continued in the apostles’ doctrine.” (Acts 4:32) Not only did the apostles not encourage people to divide into denominations, but they actually condemned that very thing. At Corinth, Paul had established the church by preaching the gospel so that “many of the Corinthians hearing, believed and were baptized.” (Acts 18:8) When they did that, they were all added to the church just like those people we can read about in Acts 2:38-47, they were added to the same church, the body of Christ, the only difference being their geographical location (so, same teaching, same church, different cities) When the church was well planted (established), Paul would move on to other mission fields. Not long after Paul left, they hatched out what was rapidly becoming a modern denominational situation. They had four groups, one named for Paul, one for Apollos, one for Cephas (Peter) and one for Christ (I Corinthians 1:10-17) Instead of Paul thanking God for this number of denominations so each could join the church of their choice, he condemned them as being carnal. (I Corinthians 3:3-4) To be carnally minded is death (Romans 8:6) He then said, “I beseech (or beg) you brethren, through the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that ye be perfected together in the same mind and in the same judgment.” (I Corinthians 1:10) So until, the next blog, I leave you with this question..”What would be the safe thing for us to do today?”
So, do we have any authority to join just any “church” ? Lets search the scriptures shall we?
What denomination were the apostles members of?
That is a good question. If we are going to be followers of Christ, surely the example of the apostles would be key to our walk with Christ! That the apostles were members of the church which Jesus built will not be denied by any, but once they made the decision to follow Christ, did they then “join” the denomination of their choice? If so, what denomination did Peter choose? Did John choose another, if so, which? Can you give the name of any denomination now in existence that was in existence at the time the apostles were alive? According to church historians not one denomination, except the Catholic Church can trace its existence back to the fifteenth century. The Catholic Church however, can not go back to the sixth century and find its organization or peculiar doctrines. If none of these denominations were in existence in the days of the apostles, it follows that the apostles were not members of them. Now, did the apostles join anything after they became members of the church which some are pleased to call the universal church, the church that Jesus built? If they did there is not one word in the New Testament about it. We can conclude that they did not, for in that book we are given all things that pertain to life and godliness (II Peter 1:3) So, I leave you with this question “Did the apostles tell others to join the church of their choice?”
I know some people are so fed up with religion that this post is the last thing you want to see right!? However, the article I found by Roy H. Lanier is just too interesting. If you are in doubt about your faith or what to believe in, doing research is an honorable gesture. We are actually told to try the spirit by the spirit I John 4:1 “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.” (compare your faith practices to the Word of God),and we are told to examine ourselves as well to see if we are in “the faith” “Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?” (2 Corinthians 13:5) So, lets make this a series of discussions. You’re probably asking, how does this relate to my blog? People, there is nothing more beautiful than TRUTH.
Church of Christ vs. Denominationalism
“There is one body” (Ephesians 4:4); “The body is the church” (Ephesians 1:22; Colossians 1:18); therefore, there is one church. Jesus said, “Upon this rock, I will build “my” church (Matthew 16:18), not “my churches”; the Lord built his church, just one. “He is the savior of the body (church), (Ephesians 5:23); the body is the church; therefore, he is the savior of the church.
From the conclusion that the Lord built one, and only one church, there is no escape; and the preachers of leading denominations have quit contending that the Bible speaks of more than one church. I leave you with this question til next time, Do we have any authority for joining just any church?
So, I flat ironed my hair……..yeh, that’s it. No bells and whistle feeling folks. I don’t know, I’m just so over the “hair journey” thing. Oh, of course everyone loved it. I got the “oohs and ahhs”, but I am referring to my own feelings…No, I don’t want to relax. If I relaxed my hair, it would almost always be pinned up so what’s the point right? I almost wish I had a pixie cut with a lil flare though….
What cha’ think? I don’t know….I can see it? Ooooh, it would be a great style for bike riding!
Another one of my purchases from Ulta. This is called Flamingo. The flash on the camera actually makes it look lighter than it is. It is more like a darker bubble gum pink. I would compare it more to the number 18 on the color wheel featured here:
Yep folks, sticking to my word. I’m still on this challenge….laziness prevailed! I washed…deep conditioned while I worked out….rinsed, looked at this rug of mine and decided…..not today! So, still rocking the curly fro peeps! Maybe in another two weeks depending on the weather, and it be God’s will that we live. I believe my last flat iron was sometime in May?
I hope to do a protein treatment before flat ironing. So……..for those of you who decided to face the no direct heat challenge, carry on! If you needed a break from the madness and flat ironed (lol) it’s okay. It’s only hair…whatever you decided, thank God and move on!
11 weeks people….I’ve had this big, thick, and curly hairfro!!!!! I just want to feel my scalp for a moment, even a second maybe? The current temp dares me! Why go through the grueling process of washing, deep conditioning, blow drying, and straightening my hair for hours just so it can sweat out??? But, my scalp? This isn’t about a length check, or seeing if I can get a relaxer look without the chemicals… I just want to feel my scalp and run my hands through my hair with ease…..(speaking gently and slowly) For 11 weeks its’ been afro-bun, afro-bun, afro-bun, afro….well you get the idea. Today is my wash and deep condition day. It’s my chance to straighten my hair……to embrace the versatility natural hair provides! I’m not disappointed in myself about breaking the challenge, any delay in heat is an achievement! (confidence is building….) I know in the end, only one thing will deter my decision to decide to flat iron and keep me on this no direct heat challenge……….LAZINESS.
